A Texas higher education panel recently recommended “students be required to complete at least 10 percent of their degrees outside the classroom, through options like online courses.” While it’s unusual to require online education, this does point out the widespread recognition that the ways in which education is delivered must change to keep pace with a changing world.
While cost efficiencies often drive organizations to look at ways to use technology to supplement traditional classroom education, there are many other significant benefits that accrue, in both the public and private sector, to organizations that adopt distance learning, collaboration and other learning technologies. Things like the ability to reach across time zones, to make better use of instructor and student time, and to teach students the way they want to learn have all led to a collaborative environment that better adapts to modern educational imperatives.
