ISO publishes new recommendations for L&D metrics

The document includes 52 recommended L&D metrics for large organizations and 19 for small and mid-size organizations, as well as definitions, examples and formulas for how to use them.

The International Organization for Standardization released its recommendations for learning and development metrics in late June 2023.

The document includes 52 recommended L&D metrics for large organizations and 19 for small and mid-size organizations, as well as definitions, examples and formulas for how to use them. The first section of the document also lays out a framework that describes five different kinds of metrics users.

These metrics are intended to be a starting point for organizations that are looking to create a robust way to measure their learning function.

“The standard is the result of two years’ work by an international group of experts and provides detailed guidance on selecting and reporting metrics by type of user and type of metric,” says Dave Vance, executive director for the Center for Talent Reporting and lead author of ISO’s new L&D metrics standards.

“I believe this standard has the potential to provide much needed guidance for the profession on how to select metrics, which ones to select, and how to report them,” he adds. “It should help us to standardize our language and approach to measurement, which will not only make us more productive but significantly improve the quality of our data and benchmarking.”

The 42-page document, ISO/TS 30437, is available for purchase by the general public.
