Education company Pearson has been selected to create and deliver an online learning platform for central government employees in the United Kingdom.

Through this platform, which is the first of its kind for the government, employees will be able to access learning and development opportunities tailored to their roles and the skills they wish to develop, according to a news release.

Employees will also be able to create profiles to capture skills and track their progress. This data will help construct an accurate picture of the skills landscape across the government and allow managers to take a more strategic approach to recruitment, learning, and talent development opportunities.

“Our ambition is to provide a great user experience for all government employees, empowering them to take charge of their own training and development needs and take a proactive approach to developing their own careers,” Rebecca Birs, business change lead for the Cabinet Office, said in the news release. “In addition, the data we will be able to harness will enable the civil service to bring about a significant step change in its skills and workforce planning capabilities.”

Pearson was chosen from 68 suppliers interested in the four-year contract. The company currently serves customers in almost 200 countries.

Now that the contract has been awarded, Birs said, they will work with Pearson to design a roll-out plan to implement the new platform across the government over the next two years.
