Record Number of Workforce Development Leaders
Attend Spring 2014 Chief Learning Officer Symposium

10th anniversary conference focused on learning community as a key influence in
enabling and sustaining success within organizations

Chicago, April 7, 2014 — The Spring 2014 Chief Learning Officer Symposium drew a record-breaking audience of nearly 400 chief learning officers, business executives, human capital management experts, and learning and development professionals to Dana Point, Calif., last week. During the three-day meeting, March 31 to April 2, leading members of the learning community discussed key issues in workforce development and celebrated the Symposium's 10th anniversary.

To mark the historic milestone, Chief Learning Officer magazine hosted the conference at The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel, where the first Symposium was held a decade ago. The magazine’s editors used the opportunity to develop an executive-level educational agenda that highlighted the contributions of industry leaders who have made the learning community a powerful influence and competitive advantage in business performance.

Among the luminaries on the program was Fred Harburg, a former chief learning officer for several multinational corporations and one of the learning industry’s most sought-after speakers, educators and consultants. On day two, Harburg — who presented at the original Symposium 10 years ago — delivered fresh insights via a keynote focusing on how CLOs can ethically and effectively use the power of stories to shape the community conversation and influence organizational culture.

Another highlight on the agenda was a series of “Voice of the CLO” sessions. During intimate “fireside chats,” senior practitioners from the learning community described their journeys to the top L&D job and shared some of the critical strengths, experiences, connections and skills that led to their success. Senior executives tapped to participate were Cedric Coco, senior vice president of learning and organizational effectiveness at Lowe’s Companies Inc.; Annette K. Thompson, chief learning officer, Farmers Insurance; Kimo Kippen, chief learning officer, Hilton Worldwide; Samantha Hammock, vice president of regulatory learning and administration for American Express Bank; and Ken Fenoglio, president of AT&T University.

The CLO Symposium program also featured a wide range of panel discussions, feet-on-the-ground practitioner workshops and interactive sessions, as well as opportunities to meet and network with industry professionals and vendors. On the evening preceding the Symposium, Chief Learning Officer magazine recognized 60 outstanding organizations named to the 2014 LearningElite, during a gala dinner sponsored by Saba, getAbstract and Procter & Gamble. The LearningElite is widely recognized as the industry’s most meaningful and comprehensive benchmarking initiative.

Learning industry executives who were unable to attend the live event in California can access all the workshops, keynotes, panel discussions and presentations they missed when the Spring 2014 CLO Symposium: Online Edition airs April 28 to May 1, 2014. Registration for this free online event is now open at closymposium.com/online. For convenience, Symposium content also will be available on-demand for 90 days after it airs online.
