As learning leaders, most of you are probably focused on how to instruct and engage employees in your enterprise to achieve organizational performance goals. But what about you? What approach do you take to develop your proficiency in your role?!@!

I’ve been thinking about this lately while reading Crucibles of Leadership by Robert J. Thomas, who espouses the idea of having a personal learning strategy (PLS). He is especially keen on how the PLS works in the context of a crucible — that is, a trying circumstance in which one faces incredible adversity.

Thomas maintains that people should take an introspective look at themselves, particularly the ways in which they’ve handled challenging situations and how they learned the most important lessons of their lives. From that, they can discern the learning approaches that work best for them.
