We work in an amazing industry. It’s astonishing in many ways, including how it advances businesses and professionals at the same time, not benefiting one at the expense of the other. It also is remarkable because it marries opposites so successfully, meaning our industry is built on the twin principles of fostering your original thinking while leveraging the proven best practices of others.
I was mulling this over just a few weeks ago, sitting in a ballroom at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach during our Fall 2005 CLO Symposium. I was watching a parade of CLOs take the stage to collect well-deserved Learning In Practice awards, and I couldn’t help but speculate on how these award-winners built their programs on the shoulders of giants, with dedicated staffs, original thinking and good old-fashioned hard work.
Those are impressive accomplishments, and this year’s awards program celebrated some outstanding people. Fifteen learning executives took home 19 awards, from CLO of the Year Ted Hoff, vice president of learning for IBM, to the winners of the newly introduced category, Utilization of Marketing Resources. I’d like to end this month’s letter with an invitation: Visit www.cloevents.com/fall2005. Our Fall 2005 CLO Symposium was sold out, so regretfully, some of you were unable to attend, but that page features a brief recap of the events and some candid photos that I think you’ll agree give you a flavor of the Symposium.
